The 33rd Annual Run For The Roses

August 16, 2018 By eastwickpress

By Doug La Rocque

113 runners gathered under the banner at Grafton Lakes State Park for the start of the 5K road race this past Sunday, August 12, all running in support of the Grafton Community Library.  The turnout was down by about 30 participants from last year, but race officials attributed that to the weather. This year’s winner was 16-year old Spencer Daley of Troy in a time of 19:03.

The Women’s title went to 50-year old Felicia Dickinson of Wynantskill, in a time of 22:59.

The Eastwick Press was proud to be one of the primary sponsors of this year’s race.  The proceeds from the race support the library’s day to day expenses.

A Legacy

The Run for the Roses is now considered to be a legacy to former Grafton Lakes State Park Manager Tom Conklin, who initiated the race and remained one of its biggest supporters, right up to his death in June of 2011.  Not a runner himself, Mr. Conklin participated every year, often finishing dead last or near the end.  His place in the race wasn’t important to him – he ran to show his support to the Grafton Community library, the runners and the park.
