Panthers Hang On, Tamarac Falls

by Steve Bradley

Hoosick Falls took a 21-6 lead early in the third quarter and held on to beat Canajoharie – Fort Plain Friday night at the Panther Den.

Quarterback Sam Richard connected on two touchdown passes, one for 18 yards to Jeff Vincent and another for  32 yards to Max Kip and Josh Colgrove kicked the two extra points before C-FP scored. Kipp added a 27 yard run later in the second quarter and Colgrove booted another extra point to get the score to  21 – 6. Early in the fourth quarter, Kipp romped 40 yards and Colegrove added the kick to give the Panthers 28 points.

From this point, Canajoharie-Fort Plain did the rest of the scoring. Later in the third quarter, C-FP scored on a 12 yard pass to get within 28 – 12.

C-FP scored twice more in the fourth quarter to put a scare into the Panthers, but failed to make either extra point. C-FP had the ball late in fourth with a chance to pull a win out of the hat but Brennen Andrew put an end to the Cougars’ chances when he intercepted a pass and C-FP never got the ball back.

Kipp rushed for 123 yards on 12 carries, Richard had 104 yards on nine carries and Liam McGarvin rumbled for 95 yards on ten carries. Richard threw 14 passes, completing three, with two for touchdowns.

This coming Friday evening Cambridge (2-0) visits the Panther Den. It will be the first time in nine years the teams have met. There is no doubt it will be the same old heated rivalry with large numbers of fans coming out to root for their team. Hoosick Falls won the last meeting in 2009, 21-19, and has been in possession of the Ken Baker Cup since. Cambridge would like nothing better than to move that cup 10 miles up Route 22.
