A Visit To Geo P At School

by George Holcomb • Transcribed by Betty McClave • Edited by Alex Brooks

Monday, January 6, 1845: Tonight my children went with the cutter up to singing school to the widow Goodrich’s. Tonight a high wind and a little snow.

Tuesday: Some stormy. This afternoon I walked over to J. B. Maxon’s and then he went with me to Sylvenas Carpenter’s the 2nd. We took the valuation of our school district for the purpose of building a school house as we have before voted so to do in a school meeting.

Wednesday: Today I took my cutter and carried my wife to Hancock Village on a visit.

Thursday: This afternoon I walked over to J. B. Maxon’s and met the trustees of the Seventh Day Baptist and our school trustees. We agreed to pay them fifty dollars for their meeting house to make a school house and an upper room to hold meetings and other purposes, providing our school proprietors do agree to it.

Tuesday, Jan 14: I chopped and drew a load of wood from my swamp. On this evening a singing school to my house.

Tuesday, Jan 21: I took my cutter and rode over to Gilbert Green’s and he got a receit of his brother Randolph Green the town collector for my taxes which was eleven dollars and eighteen cents and I do endorse the same amount on the note I hold against said Gilbert Green. Today quite a snow.

Wednesday: Today I took my cutter and my wife with me, we went to Nassau to cousin Chauncy Row’s and called and took dinner and then we went to Brunswick to James Bush’s and we stayed tonight.

Thursday: This forenoon we went on from James Bush’s into Troy to Lucius Gibbs and took dinner with Geo P. There he boards with his school teacher. We stayed with him until three o’clock and visited and then we went on to Pittstown to cousin Ira Humphrey’s to what is called a village of Raymertown and stayed tonight.

Friday: Today Ira Humphrey and wife went with me and my wife about three miles to his wife’s father’s on a visit. Their names is Carpenter and at night we returned home with Ira Humphrey and stayed again.

Saturday: This forenoon we left Ira Humphrey’s and came to Troy and called on Geo P to let him know that we had returned and then we went up to Brunswick to James Bush and his father Mr. Calvin P. Sackett and I went to said Lucius Gibbs and had Geo P come and ride with us home with said James Bush.
