The Life Of George Holcomb

February 1, 2019 By steve bradley

Taking Down And Putting Up Buildings

by George Holcomb • Transcribed by Betty McClave • Edited by Alex Brooks

Monday June 2, 1845: Today my sons washed our sheep. I called to Mr. Simmons  to have him not begin to take down the Seventh Day Baptist Church tomorrow on account of holding the funeral of the Palmer boy.

Tuesday: Today I and my family all but Sarah went to the funeral of Herman Palmer. Elder Jones preached at the Seventh Day Church. We all rode in our two horse pleasure wagon and Mary Wylie with us.

Saturday: This morning I took my one horse team and carried Charlotte to Mr. Jerry Vary’s for her to ride to Berlin with him to get three bonnets to Miss Dennison’s that she had whitened and trimmed for my wife and daughters and I paid two dollars and twenty five cents for her doing the three bonnets. Towards night I took my one horse team and fetched Charlotte from Mr. Jerry Vary’s.

Monday: Tonight we kept three peddlers. One was Hosea Moffitt of this town with his horse, his bill 31 cts and the other two went with one horse and their bill was seventy five cts, their names I do not recollect. One was from Berlin and the other was from Sand Lake. All three were decrepid or lame.

Tuesday: This afternoon I went to help take down the Seventh Day Baptist Church but there was not help enough, but we took down all but the bents. Today Geo P sheered sheep for Wm. T. Brown for seventy five cts and John F. sheered sheep for H. P. Wylie in the way of changing works. Tonight we kept a peddler on foot of this town, name Daboll, his bill 31 cts.

Friday: Today my two sons sheared our sheep and H.P. Wylie helped them in the way of changing works, 27 of them, 130 pounds wool.

Sunday: Today I and my wife and son Geo P. and two daughters went to the Chapel to meeting, Elder Spoor preached and at four o’clock I and my wife and son Geo P. and daughter Charlotte went to Hancock  Village to meeting, a Universalist preached by the name of Gardner, a stranger. The meeting was held in an old store where Elder Betts holds meeting.

Tuesday: Today I chopped and drew two chestnut trees for timber and hewed one of them. The timber is for horse shed for the Chapel, my son John F helped get them down.

Wednesday: Today I hewed the other stick of timber and then I took my ox team and drew the two sticks of timber, both of them 22 feet in length, up to the Chapel to put into the horse shed.

Thursday: Today I walked up to the Chapel and helped work at the horse sheds and I took dinner to Nicholas Gardner’s. Today Geo P. sheared sheep for John Wylie for 75 cts.
