Common Reeds (Phragmites australis) are tall (6 to 10 feet) invasive plants that spread in thick masses in area wetlands, as well as marshes and shorelines throughout the U.S. They obstruct native plants and the movement of turtles.

Reed seeds can be spread by the wind, beaver, or ATV tires. Since the reeds are extremely difficult to remove, it is best to be aware of them and not spread their seed to areas on the Rensselaer Plateau that are yet to be invaded.
