Canajoharie 0 0 0 1 0 0 0        1 5 1

Saturday, May 25. Played at Canajoharie. Number twelve seeded Canajoharie got to this game much the same way as number thirteen seeded Hoosick Falls (O 11-9, L 7-9) did, by defeating a much higher seed, number five seeded Holy Trinity, by the score of 18-1.

Jake Sparks, an eighth grader playing his first year of varsity baseball at HFCS, fires a pitch. Hoosick Falls’ head baseball coach Mike Lilac says of Sparks, “I’ve been coaching baseball at Hoosick Falls for 29 years, and he has the potential to be one of the best players I’ve ever coached.” Photo by Steve Bradley

Hoosick Falls got the lead in the third inning when Max Kipp hit an RBI single. Canjo tied it in the bottom of the fourth and the teams went into the final inning still tied at 1-1.

With one out in the top of the seventh, Jake Sparks hit a two run single with the bases loaded to give the Panthers the lead. The Panthers tacked on two more runs before their part of the inning came to end. They  held Canjo scoreless in the bottom of the inning to come home with the win and the right to advance to the semifinals of the Class C sectionals.

Sparks (3-2) pitched a complete game, giving up just one run to a team that scored 18 in its previous game.

Hoosick Falls 1 2 0 0 1 0 1          5 8 1

Granville 0 2 0 0 1 0 0                 3 7 0

Thursday, May 23. Played at Granville. At the end of six innings Hoosick Falls had a one run lead but was in serious trouble. Number four seed Granville had the bases loaded and the Panthers had no outs. Evan Webster (5-1) was on the mound . Webster got out of the jam by getting the first two outs on stikeouts and the third out with a fly ball. Hoosick Falls added an insurance run in the top of the seventh with a Sam Richard RBI single to get the upset win.

Webster went on to complete the game on the mound.

Richard, the leadoff hitter, had a single, two doubles and an RBI. Sam Wickenden had two singles and two RBIs. Webster had two singles and Nick Houghton had a double.
