Brunswick’s Newest Eagle Scout Takes Flight

Submitted by Councilman Dan Casale

A court of Honor was held for Justin Spenard on Sunday, June 2 at the Center Brunswick Firehouse.  Justin is the newest Eagle Scout for Brunswick based Boy Scout Troop 537.

Besides earning the prerequisite number of Merit Badges, an Eagle Scout must complete a community improvement project.  This includes forming a team, planning and execution of the endeavor.

Eagle Scout Justin Spenard stands with his mother Karol and father Tom, along with Brunswick Town Councilman Dan Casale, (far right). Mr. Casale presented the new Eagle Scout with proclamations from the Rensselaer County Legislature, and NYS Senator Daphne Jordan, as well as a plaque from the Town of Brunswick and Supervisor Phil Herrington. Photo provided.

Justin’s project was the overhaul of the Grafton Community Library’s basement. The library has been using the basement for community events, but it was cluttered and dingy.

Justin’s project consisted of finding new homes for the copious amount of unwanted books in the basement, as well as painting the walls and ceiling.

The first step was getting rid of the books. None of them could be thrown out – all had to be given a new home. Books were distributed to various individuals and organizations who would make good use of them. One of which gave books to a child who would not normally have access to them. From there, the basement was emptied of all furniture, and cleaned in preparation for painting. Small holes and nicks in the wall had to be patched up as well.  Painting was completed over the course of three days. Once it had dried, all of the wanted furniture was moved back into place.

Now, the library’s basement is usable for events, and more attractive than before, ready to offer community programs for generations to come.
