Honoring A Hoosick Falls Princess

Submitted by the Legislative Majority and Minority Offices

The Rensselaer County Legislature took time at the beginning of its Tuesday, August 13 meeting to honor Delilah Hoag of Hoosick Falls. Ms. Hoag is the County’s Dairy Princess for 2019. Her duties include visiting schools and appearing at community and civic events to talk about milk, dairy products and the dairy industry.

Extending a Moratorium

Lawmakers on both sides of the aisle voted to amend a recently enacted local law that placed a one-year moratorium on the establishment of solid waste management facilities in any community that is within one mile of the Hudson River. The amended law now includes sites within one mile of the Tomhannock Reservoir and its tributaries, as well as any tributary of the Hudson River.

Early Voting Sites

The lawmakers voted to accept $200,935 in NYS Grant monies to offset the implementation costs of the newly mandated early voting law.  The Schodack and Brunswick Town Halls have been picked as locations. However, legislation to add a third site in Troy was rejected in committee.  Democratic lawmakers sponsored the bill stating Troy is the largest locality in the County, and the current approved sites are beyond walking distance and not readily accessible by bus. Republican lawmakers countered that neither Democratic legislators nor the Democratic Election Commissioner were able to find a suitable location in Troy for use as an early voting site.

Lawmakers approved a resolution authorizing the distribution of computer tablets and laptops to enhance the County Health Department’s ability to collect accurate data about the opioid crisis.
