Delgado’s Farmer Relief Act Is Now Law
Legislation sponsored by 19th District Congressional Representative Antonio Delgado to aid family farmers during downtime in the agricultural economy, and with the support of several other Republican and Democratic Representatives, has been signed into law by President Trump. Specifically, the “Family Farmer Relief Act” eases the process of reorganizing debt through Chapter 12 bankruptcy rules, a tool created specifically to help family farmers during tough economic times.
In his press release on the bill’s passage and the President’s subsequent signature, Mr. Delgado says “Today is a victory for our small and mid-size farmers who now have the flexibility to reorganize their debt and continue operations in what continues to be a challenging time for agriculture. In this era of bitter partisanship, I was proud to lead my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to pass a bipartisan, commonsense bill to help small farmers in New York’s 19th Congressional District during this down farm economy.
Hoosick’s Jeff Wysocki, a member of the Rensselaer County Legislator and himself an area farmer, tells The Eastwick Press he doesn’t think making it easier to file for bankruptcy is the answer to farmers’ economic woes. According to Mr. Wysocki, the nation needs to “find a way for farmers to produce a product they can make a profit on. It’s the only answer.”
