No, You Cannot Close That Road
By Doug La Rocque
Once the Berlin Town Board absorbed the news about the loss of the Berlin Fire Department Ambulance, it was a rather quick and routine meeting, until what happens in many towns, it became time for public comment. It was then that Robert Herrick stood to address the board, about what he claims were plans by a neighbor to close off a portion of Bower Road, which leads into lands currently under a conservation trust, and will soon become owned by New York State. He said the unnamed individual has expressed plans to him, to build an archway over the road where it borders his property, and close it off. Mr. Herrick also claims the individual has already installed cement footings on both sides of the road, well within the towns. 25 foot right of way that extends out in both directions from the center of the road.
To Mr. Herrick’s comments, Berlin Highway Superintendent Jim Winn said emphatically, “he is not going to close the road.” Mr. Winn said he would be paying the alleged offender a visit the very next day, to set things straight.
