New Stewart’s Shop Opens Its Doors

By Doug La Rocque

In the words of today’s younger generation “it took, like, forever,” but the area’s newest Stewart’s Shop finally opened its doors for business on Thursday, September 5.

The store was first proposed to the Brunswick Planning Board nearly two years ago, in October of 2017. Since then the Saratoga Springs based corporation has had to overcome resistance to its original road redesign from the Center Brunswick Methodist Church, who did not want a third lane added to Hoosick Road (NY Route 7) nearest their property, opposition to the plans to tear down what some described as an historic house on the site, traffic concerns, many changes ordered by the NYS Department of Transportation and a small run-in with National Grid.  Each proposed opening date had to be pushed back for one reason or another.

The new building was designed to have some resemblance to the structure it replaced, and is much larger and has many more gas islands than the old store across the street that is now closed and has a big for sale sign on it. It also has an entrance and exit on Hoosick Road as well as Sweet Milk Creek Road.

Whether all this expense, time and perseverance on the part of Stewart’s was all worth it, only their bottom line will tell.  What we can tell you is, the store plans a grand opening ceremony on Friday, September 13 at 10 am.
