Submitted by the Karen McGovern Fund

On Saturday, September 7 the air was filled with excitement, fun, memories, and of course volleyballs back and forth. The 20th Annual Karen McGovern Volleyball Tournament was a huge success. 19 teams competed for both A & B Team recognition.

Winners were:

The B Team—The Untouchables

The A Team—Elevate

As is the case each year the fund recognizes a business/organization that has supported the Karen and Molly Fund throughout the years. This year’s recipient was Brown’s Brewing Company. Garry and Kelly Brown, and Brown’s Brewing Company has a long history with the McGovern family and they have never missed an opportunity to offer any help and support needed to ensure the success of the Fund’s Mission.

This year the annual Karen McGovern Courage Award was presented to a most worthy honoree, Dr. Marcus Martinez, who exemplifies all the attributes Karen showed during her struggle with cancer which included courage, grace, integrity and faith. Dr. Martinez has not only demonstrated these during his 5 year battle with cancer but continuously provides care, support, encouragement, and love to his family, neighbors and patients on an ongoing basis.

Father Tom Zelker, Pastor of Immaculate Conception Church in Hoosick Falls, provided a heartwarming testament to this in his talk about Dr. Martinez prior to the presentation of the award.

Over 50 Chinese Auction Items were available to win, a 50/50 Raffle was held and donations kept coming in throughout the day. It has been reported that over $20,000 was raised. This money will be a huge help in providing funds for so many local and area persons, or families struggling with Cancer, Long-Term or Catastrophic Illnesses and the financial burden that accompanies these diagnoses.

If you would like to make a donation at any time you may send it to
