Monarch Migration
Each autumn, millions of monarch butterflies (Danaus plexippus) migrate from the United States and Canada to mountains in central Mexico where they winter until conditions favor a return flight in the spring. The monarch migration is threatened by habitat loss in Mexico and throughout breeding areas in the United States and Canada.

These two monarchs were photographed this month on sedum in a Petersburgh garden that is part of a registered Monarch Waystation. Maintaining a Monarch Waystation helps to ensure the continuation of the monarch migration in North America. To create a Waystation, see https://www.monarchwatch.org.
