The Universalist Preacher Comes To The Lecture Room

by George Holcomb • Transcribed by Betty McClave • Edited by Alex Brooks

Friday, December 25, 1846: This forenoon John Conklin butchered two pigs and a sheep for us and I agreed to take my team and draw wood for him to pay him and this afternoon I took my cutter and my wife with me. We rode to Lebanon to Frederic Everett’s store and he looked over my account and told me I owed him sixteen dollars and 46 cents and then he agreed to take two fat pigs at five dollars per cwt and I agreed to deliver them this afternoon. Then we returned home and towards night I took another horse and carried my two pig pork to Frederick Everett’s as I agreed and had credited to my account. One weighed 134 pounds and the other 142 pounds, which amount was thirteen dollars and 80 cts. I went and came home in rain storm.

Monday: This morning John F. drove our lambs over to my Rodgers Farm to winter for Westalo Rodgers to fodder with the rest of my sheep as is before agreed, and I went on to said farm and John F. helped me load a not large pine log and I drew it to E. Goodrich saw mill to be sawed into plank. I went with my horse team and returned onto said farm and drew home a load of wood that was chopped last winter.

Tuesday: I this forenoon took my horse team and drew a load of wood from Goodrich Hollow or on side of Hancock Mountain for John Conklin, which pays him for butchering two pigs and a sheep last Friday. This evening I took my two horse sleigh and carried my family to meeting to the lecture room over the school room. E.C. Hughes preached and he went to my house and stayed with us tonight.

Wednesday: Today quite a storm with rain and snow, E.C. Hughes stayed with us until half past two o’clock and then went to Petersburgh to preach this evening, I paid him 12 cts for a Universalist Almanac.

Sunday, January 24: Today Jabez Babcock Jnr died, of Lebanon Springs.

Tuesday: This evening I tended meeting at the lecture room in our school house. The Rev E. C. Hughes preached from Pittsfield but a few attended, a misunderstanding about the appointment and unfavorable weather. Tonight young Daboll the trunk peddler stayed with us.

Wednesday: My children went to the funeral for Jabez Babcock.
