Waiving Marriage License Fees for Military

By Doug La Rocque

Once the discussion concerning the ambulance situation in the town was finished, the Thursday, October 10 meeting of the Berlin Town Board was quick and smooth.  The board members agreed to join several other area municipalities in waiving marriage license fees for active members of the United States Armed Forces. Supervisor Rob Jaeger, indicating he felt it was the least they could.  All other members of the board were of a like mind, and the matter was approved without dissent.

The rest of the evening was basically departmental and committee reports.  Water District # 1 needs the filing of a cross contamination certification with the NYS Department of Health.  Wel-Dun Water systems of Cambridge, hired by the District as its operator, will handle the chore. There is a new door on the District 2 Pump Station, with one more apparently needing replacement. Highway Superintendent Jim Winn said the Department of Environmental Conservation has signed off on the new culvert replacement project on Mattison Hollow.

He plans some road and bridgework on Watson Road, with the town highway getting some assistance from Hammersmith Gravel Mine, located on that road.

Codes Enforcement Officer Alan Yerton told the Board he had just that week completed three days of mandatory training in Albany, and was pleased to report there were no major code changes in the pipeline for the next year. He did say with all the new programs being digital or on line based, he will need a lap top computer.

Transfer Station Manager Bud Hall said they are still having a problem with some people sneaking in the facility.  Recently, four vacuums have shown up, with nobody sneaking in to steal them back.

In correspondence, Supervisor Jaeger said Charter Communications is discontinuing the Disney Movies on Demand channel. The Board has set its budget workshop for Thursday, October 24 at its regular workshop meeting.
