Hoosick Falls Golfer Leads Pack At State Qualifier
Submitted by James Lynch
Junior Mat Smith shot a tournament leading three under par 68 on Tuesday, October 15, while also notching his first ever hole in one, at the Orchard Creek Golf Club in Altamont. Senior Ryan Bloomer is currently sitting in sixth place in the Section 2 State qualifier, having shot a first round two over par 73. The boys were competing with 57 other golfers from around the section for the right to compete with the section’s state team. Nine golfers will be picked, with the Panther teammates hoping to hold on to their positions in the final round on Friday.

Last week, three members of the Hoosick Falls team competed in the Section 2 Class C/D tournament with some impressive results.
Hoosick Falls junior Mat Smith was the low score for the Panthers, finishing with a six-over par round of 78. Mat finished second to Galway’s Ryan Loveless (75) for the overall tournament lead.
Senior Ryan Bloomer finished in 3rd, with a seven-over par round of 79. Sophomore Miles Smith finished with a round of 95 to complete Hoosick Falls’ team of three, the required number to contend for the team championship.
Together, the Panthers finished in first place by an impressive 28 stroke margin over last year’s champion, Duanesburg.
This is the golf team’s first Class C/D Sectional Championship since the 2016 season.
