Joe Gerwin and Jeff St Gelais Become 4-time Champions
Semifinal Match, Peter Martin III / Kevin Weeden vs Joe Gerwin / Jeff St Gelais
This match was played straight up as both teams had combined handicaps of 9. Hole one saw Jeff St Gelais save par with a 10-foot putt. All players parred the tough hole 1. Jeff and Joe both parred hole 2, with another 10-foot plus putt by Jeff. They went 1 up. Kevin and Jeff both parred hole 3, but Peter and Kevin added another stroke. After hole 4 saw Kevin’s tee shot put him in trouble, the score was Jeff and Joe up 4 strokes. Pete and Jeff both had nice pars on hole 5 as the hole was pushed. Kevin and Pete made a move on the par 5 sixth hole with Pete’s birdie and Kevin’s par. This cut the lead to 2 strokes. Hole 7 was the turning point. Joe sank a 15-foot downhill birdie while his partner, Jeff, once again sank a 10-footer for par. Kevin and Pete had par, bogey, but lost 2 strokes to go down 4. Hole 8 saw all pars. Kevin and Pete needed some help on hole 9, but didn’t get it. A par, bogey for Joe and Jeff was enough. Final stats: Joe shot 37 with 4 pars and a birdie. Jeff shot 37 with 7 pars. Jeff and Joe made 5 putts beyond 10 feet. The Pros only make half of their 10 footers. This was their best combined score of the year, 4 over par. This was 5 under their handicap. Kevin finished with a 39 and 7 pars. Peter also shot 39 with 4 pars and a birdie. This was one under their handicap, but not enough. Joe and Jeff won flight A.
Semifinal Match, Art English / Darrin Sedgwick
vs Gerry Taber / Dave Clark
Gerry and Dave were getting one stroke 17 vs 16 team handicap. The first hole saw Gerry and Dave take a 4 stroke lead with their 2 bogeys. After 2 pars on hole 2, they were now up 5 strokes. Darrin’s par on hole 3 helped cut the lead to 1. Art had a nice par on the #1 handicapped hole #4. The match was still at 1 stroke. Gerry had par and Dave had a bogey on hole #5 to increase their lead back to 4 strokes. Gerry’s birdie on hole #6 made the lead 6 strokes with 3 to play. Two more pars by Gerry and Dave had the lead to 7. Art and Darrin fired back with 2 pars on hole 8, but it wasn’t enough. Up 6 with hole 9 to play, Gerry finished with a par and Dave a bogey to win convincingly by 6 strokes. Final stats: Art shot 43 with 4 pars. Darrin shot 45 with 3 pars. Gerry fired in a 39 with 5 pars and a birdie. Dave was solid at 44 with 2 pars. Gerry and Dave were the flight B winners.
Championship Match, Jeff St Gelais / Joe Gerwin (9) vs Gerry Taber / Dave Clark (17)
Joe and Jeff were giving 8 strokes. Joe’s par on hole 1 cut 3 strokes off the difference. Gerry and Dave both parred hole #2 to get 2 strokes back. A par by Joe and Dave on hole #3 kept the lead at 7 strokes. Jeff’s par on hole 4 cut the lead to 5. Hole 5 saw a 5 stroke swing with Jeff getting another par and Joe bogeying the hole. The lead was gone. Joe, Jeff and Dave all parred hole #6 to go 1 up. Two more pars on hole 7 by Jeff and Joe extended the lead to 3 strokes with 2 holes left. A push on hole 8 meant the lead was 3 strokes going into hole #9. Joe and Jeff finished the deal with 2 pars and the championship. Final Stats: Jeff St Gelais shot another 37 with 7 pars. Jeff is just a money player!! Joe was solid with 5 pars, including all 3 par threes. Dave shot a 43 with 5 pars. Gerry came in at 45 with 2 pars. Jeff and Joe are the only team to win multiple titles in the last 14 years.
