Splendid Scarab
The Splendid Earth-boring Beetle (Geotrupes splendidus) is native to eastern North America. Adults emerge in the fall and prefer to eat fungi. Males dig burrows below the fungi where they wait for females. Pairs overwinter in the burrows.
This scarab was about one-inch long, and is now probably living below ground in Petersburgh.
