Honoring Our Veterans

Submitted by Mary Lou Walters

The Petersburgh Veterans Memorial Community Center (PVMCC) is beginning a fundraiser to purchase Veterans banners for some of our Veterans who have passed on.  This effort was kicked off at the Veterans Day Dinner, and thanks to our 50/50 raffle being donated back by Barbara Snyder and a donation by Kolin Buzerak, enough money was raised for our first banner.  These funds will be used to purchase a banner for Herman Barnhart. Mr. Barnhart was killed in action on Saipan on July 10, 1944. An effort is being made to find relatives of Mr. Barnhart in order to proceed.

The picture from the groundbreaking for the PVMCC. If you recognize any of the men in this photo, not mentioned above, please contact Mary Lou Walters. Photo provided.

Another priority will be for those veterans who do not yet have banners and broke the ground for PVMCC. The family members we have been able to contact have all indicated they will purchase their veteran’s banner.   Help is needed to identify some of the men.  Those recognized in this October 23, 1945 picture are William Nugent, Leyton Church, Thomas Kenneth Rose Sr., Howard Walter, Henry Allen and Richard Weaver.  We are trying to track down the identities and family members of Mr. Weaver and the unknown men. If anyone knows of these men or other Petersburgh veterans who died in action please let Mary Lou Walters know at 518-658-0136 or waltersmarylou@gmail.com.

The fundraiser will be an open community souper supper the second Friday of each month from 5 to 8 pm.  Drop in whatever time you can with your soup, bowl, spoon and beverage.  There will be an open mic for those who wish to share stories or music and games for those who wish to bring cards or board games.  A donation jar will be there to collect for the veterans’ banners.

If the temperature is under zero or the weather is inclement the event will be canceled for the month.
