Common Haircap Moss (Polytrichum commune) is a native moss that grows in the eastern U.S. where there is plenty of rainfall.
Although the stems are usually two to four inches in length, they can be tall for moss exceeding a foot or more. This moss was found in the wet woods of Petersburgh.
