A Financial Upgrade Brings Rewards
By Michelle Van Horn
Right in time for George Washington’s birthday, the Stephentown Town Board announced at its Monday, February 17 meeting, the Town is using a new bank and its accounts are finally earning a small percentage of interest rather than paying a fee. In addition, the Town is looking into putting the general fund into a 6-month CD for a bigger return since the monies won’t move for most of the year. Also, the Town is further stepping into this century with bonafide credit cards (plastic!) issued to Superintendent Eckhardt, Town Clerk Stephanie Wagar, and Highway Superintendent Alden Goodermote. What spawned this modern financial upgrade? The Council has run into issues in the past with certain companies not accepting the old financial means. As a result of not living in the world of plastic, council members have sometimes used their own personal accounts to pay town bills. Mr. Eckhardt recounts not recognizing a charge on his personal credit card bill one month, disputing it, and then the town website was mysteriously shut off. Whoops!
New Cable Is Coming, And So Is The Check
Councilmember Bill Jennings is pleased to announce that the Town is nearing completion with two proposals for cable TV services in Stephentown. A public hearing will be held Monday, March 9 at 7 pm at Stephentown Town Hall, 26 Grange Hall Road, to hear the companies, Spectrum Northeast, and Consolidated Communications, DBA Berkshire Cable Corp propose their respective services to the Town. Side note-Stephentown is still waiting on Consolidated Communications’ filing fee. The company said ‘the check is in the mail,’ which one of the council members jokingly referred to as one of the ‘three great lies.’ Stay tuned for updates.
