George Serves On County Court Jury

by George Holcomb • Transcribed by Betty McClave • Edited by Alex Brooks

Saturday, October 16, 1847: We this forenoon dug 30 bushels carrots and put in the celler. This afternoon I and Geo P. finished digging potatoes on my Rodgers farm. We had in all eighty bushels of potatoes on said farm.

Monday: At one o’clock this morning John F. took the one horse wagon and carried me to the gate at the Alps village in Nassau and from there I walked to Troy by eight o’clock. I went as jury to the County Court. The jury was called in the forenoon and then in the afternoon and dismissed until Thursday at ten o’clock, no cases on the docket to be tried. I took breakfast at Wm. Chapman’s grocery and paid 15 cts and I paid three cts for my dinner to a boarding house by the name of the widow Orr near the stone Episcopal Church, and I left my valice of clothes to the Dentist Hogan. I left Troy at nearly five o’clock for home. I rode to Sand Lake with a lumber man by the name of Hawkins. I stopped to cousin Chauncy Rows and took supper, and got home by twelve o’clock tonight.

Wednesday: Today I got my cider barrels out of the celler and took them to the brook and put them to soak. Today my boys dug 25 bushels carrots and this evening I carried the carrots into the celler.

Thursday: This morning at one o’clock I started again for Troy to the Court as jury. John F. went with the two horse lumber wagon and carried me to Troy. We got to Troy at eight o’clock this morning. I gave John F. 75 cts to pay expenses and gates coming home, we went toll-free going out on account of I being on the jury. At 11 o’clock the court was called and adjourned. Tonight I took board in Third Street No 47, to a boarding house to the widow Margaret Orr, bargained to pay two dollars and 50 cts per week. I paid three cts to Wm. Chapman for gin.

Friday: I sat on one case, an assault and battery brought in guilty.

Saturday: I had no business. Jury dismissed until Monday. On this evening I paid to an auction six cts for a pair suspenders and four cts for a box blacking and four cts for a money purse.

Sunday: This forenoon I went to the Catholic meeting and this afternoon and evening I went to the Methodist meeting.

Monday: This morning I bid three cts for brandy and sugar for the Coramorbos to Wm Chapman’s grocery. This afternoon called on a case of theft and adjourned overnight.

Tuesday: We jurors continued on the same case until evening and found the criminal guilty.
