Together Again
Wood Frogs (Lithobates sylvaticus) were actively breeding in a vernal pool in the upper Petersburgh woods from Friday afternoon to Saturday afternoon, before the cold forced them to seek cover. Wood frogs are freeze tolerant but prefer the temperature to be at least 40 degrees before initiating their spring ritual. Male wood frogs, like this one, tend to be a dark gray or brown during the mating period.

The female frogs are usually larger and more of a peach color. Later in the woods, the frogs are a tan color with dark patches around the eyes.
