George Returns From Jury Duty In Troy

Wednesday, October 27, 1847: This afternoon sat on a criminal case brought in petty larceny, Guilty, Dow the criminal. This evening I went to Morris place to a play display, barn music 12 cts.
Thursday: I was panneled on a case of burning a barn in Sand Lake, it was an Irish Pat , adjourned to tomorrow, tonight I took brandy and pills, paid three cents to Chapman.
Friday: The same case of burning the barn continued through the day and at sunset the Jury brought in the criminal not guilty and I was paid 14 dol 50 cts and I called to my boarding place and paid up my board, three dollars 12 cts to the widow Margaret Orr and then she told me her terms of boarding my son John F. to go to school, she says she will board and wash for my son if I will board her boy 13 years old and pay his schooling and pay her one dol per week difference and I am to give an answer in three weeks. I then paid five cts in Chapman’s grocery for gin and pie and I paid three cts for cake in a grocery and at six o’clock I started for home. I rode with teamsters ten miles and then walked, got home at one o’clock on Sunday morning and tonight when I returned from Troy I found that Geo P. had gone to Boston, he went on the cars from Pittsfield on Thursday last, John F. carried him to Pittsfield and carried ten bushels turnips and two bushels of apples and sold them at 25 cts per. In time I was gone to Troy my two sons sold a three year old heifer to Moss Kent Hadsell for beef for nineteen dollars and sold to different families of the Shakers 95 bushels of turnips at 25 cents per, delivered in the field for cash, and Geo P delivered Bartlett a 40 gallons of cider to be credited on account and delivered Westalo Rodgers a barrel of cider which fulfills a contract for foddering my sheep last winter and delivered Mr. Aaron Merrils two barrels of cider on a bargain for foddering my sheep this coming winter, and John F. delivered to the Barker’s factory twelve bushels of apples 25 cts and four turnips at 25 cts.
