Plenty of Carrots

by George Holcomb • Transcribed by Betty McClave • Edited by Alex Brook

Tuesday, November 2, 1847: This afternoon John F. took the one horse wagon and went to Hancock and carried to Barker’s eight bushels and a half of apples at twenty five cents per and one bushel turnips at 25 cts per and has got the pay in cloth. From Hancock John F. comes to election to Charles Wheeler’s and I rode home from election. I rode over with Wm. B. Maxon and I paid nine cents for 25 clams to a clam peddler and fetched them home. Today Geo P. returned from Boston and today Rensselaer Sheldon does not work for he goes to election.

Friday: I and my two sons and hired man Sheldon dug carrots, and we had dug nearly or three hundred bushels the three days past.

Tuesday, Nov 9: Today I took my two horse team and went to Hancock. I carried the factory Barker’s four bushel sweet apples at 25 cts per to be credited to my sons towards some satinette cloth they had got the other day. I called to Briggs Eldridge’s and paid him nine dollars which is the interest on a note of one hundred and fifty dollars, the interest due this month. Today John F. went to Russel Palmer’s drawing Goodrich Hollow School house. Bad luck.

Thursday: Today I plowed sward for early potatoes. Said Sheldon dug carrots this afternoon and tonight his half month is out and tonight I am quite unwell.

Friday: This morning Geo P. handed said Rensselaer Sheldon the cash for his half month work which is four dol and 50 cts and today I went with my ox team to Mr. Russel Palmer’s to draw the old school house that was drawn a short distance on Tuesday. Today Henry Gay came and got thirteen bushels of carrots and credits the same on account and tonight John F. went to Gay and Pierce’s and had two yards broad cloth charged 7 dol and a pair gater boots at two dol and 25 cts.

Saturday: Today Henry Gay sent Ludwick Babcock son with a two horse team and got twenty six bushels of carrots at 25 cts and Gay credits me on account. Today Wm Sheldon came and bargained with me for the house that Ezra Sackett moved out of. Said Sheldon agreed to work two days the first week in each month to pay his rent until the first of
April, the time expires.
