A Letter To The Editor

April 5, 2020 By steve bradley

Stand Up And Be Counted

What do highway construction funding, Medicare and Medicaid funding, school breakfast/lunch program funding and congressional representation have in common? The money for these programs is awarded to states and communities based on the census! If our communities are undercounted, we could lose money in these areas and many more (WIC, SNAP, CHIP, etc). It’s even possible to lose a seat in Congress! (Our communities are currently represented by Antonio Delgado – District 19).

How can we be sure that every member of our community, citizen and non-citzen,  is counted?

Individuals/families

go online to www.2020census.gov and complete the census

Put up a “census challenge” on your favorite social media site (The census website has information on how to do that.)

Talk about it to friends and neighbors

Businesses – make sure your employees are aware of the importance of being counted, encourage them to take time to complete the census and provide information on where to get questions answered

Community organizations – Reach out to your membership and populations you serve with the same message as above.

Who is typically undercounted? Children, people of color, rural residents, immigrants, low income households. How do we fix undercounting? Talk to people, get the word out!

How are we doing so far? There’s definitely room for improvement. Here’s how the count stands as of March 28, 2020.

Everyone counts!!! So we need to be sure that everyone gets counted.
