A New Tenant For George’s House
by George Holcomb • Transcribed by Betty McClave • Edited by Alex Brooks
Thursday, December 9, 1847: Today I and Geo P. went with the one horse wagon uptown to the vendue to sell the property of the deceased Aaron Wood. I did not buy anything. Today Wm Sheldon moved into my house that Ezra Sackett moved out of in September last and gave up all claim to the house. Said Sheldon has agreed to do me two days work at the commencement of each month until the first of April to pay his rent and then his time out.
Wednesday, December 15: Today I and Geo P. went over to my Rodgers farm with the two horse wagon and carried sheep racks and troughs and we fetched home a load of corn 35 bushels of ears that Wm Sheldon husked on shares for one out of twelve. I laid up rail fence on said farm in several places where the wind blew it down. On this evening Geo P. took the one horse wagon and went uptown after Samuel Mercy’s tool chest to come to work on the belfry to our school house but said Mercy was not ready but said he would get his tools down some other way.
Thursday: We this forenoon sorted corn and this afternoon I went to an anti-rent meeting at Henry Cranston’s store. Today Geo P. took the two horse wagon and carried Lias Dike 17 bushels of carrots at 2/9 pence per which pays him up and a balance due me and took the balance in tallow, 16 pounds at 12½ cts per pound.
Today a snow half a foot deep and damp and no wind.
