Tragedy Strikes Tamarac Graduating Class

By Doug La Rocque

An accident Saturday afternoon, May 16 in Peru, NY, near the Canadian border, has claimed the life of 17-year old Emily E. Hayden of Brunswick. Ms. Hayden was a member of the 2020 graduating class at Tamarac High School. The Brunswick/Brittonkill School District posted a notification on its Facebook site on Monday expressing its sadness and describing Ms. Hayden as a cherished high school student. They have also posted names of school counselors, psychologists and social workers, as well as their emails, for students who feel the need to reach out for counseling and conversations.

According to New York State Police, Ms. Hayden was a passenger in a Utility Track Vehicle (UTV), sometimes referred to as a 4 by 4, that was operated by a 13-year old girl. The Trooper’s report said, “the operator was unable to negotiate a curve, and the UTV overturned, coming to rest on the passenger’s side.” The report also said, “Ms. Hayden was partially ejected and pinned under the UTV. She succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene.” The driver and a 12-year old passenger were taken to a Plattsburgh hospital for treatment.

The Hamilton Funeral Home in Peru said plans for any services or memorials are incomplete at this time.
