Frozen Food Giveaway At WBH

By Amy Modesti

The weather matched the food, a little on the cold side, but the smiles on the faces of the people who received the donations was as bright as the morning sunshine.

Tuesday, May 5, Rensselaer and Berkshire County residents were invited to the 3rd Frozen Food Give Away at the Walter B. Howard Elementary School. Members of the New Lebanon School District New Lebanon Neighbors, the Town of New Lebanon Town Supervisor, and High Lawn Farm from Lee, MA volunteered their morning to give back to the local community.

Residents that are currently going through hard times due to the Corona virus picked up their free essentials. They received masks for both children and adults, 4 oz home-made hand sanitizer with empty spritzer bottles, food and beverages. Residents reached into boxes to take home packages of frozen peaches, eggs, grilled chicken fillets, whole roasted chicken, pork tenderloin, pulled pork, taco meat, turkey breast, sausage patties, orange juice and eggbeaters. High Lawn Farm donated small bottles of chocolate milk as well as half gallons of whole, non-fat and skim milk, more than 100 half gallons in fact.

The food was donated by The Regional Food Bank of Northeastern New York. The event organizers had to order extra food for Tuesday’s giveaway. With the popularity of the event two weeks ago, their food supply ran out. According to WBH Principal Andrew Kourt, their goal is to continue to hold this event every two weeks for as long as possible.

Mr. Kourt encouraged all residents of the Towns of Berlin, Stephentown, Canaan, New Lebanon, or of the Northern Berkshires, to attend the next event to be held Tuesday, May 19 at 11:15 am, rain or shine.
