CNR Receives Perfect Score For Infection Prevention
Submitted by SVHC
The Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation (CNR) at Hoosick Falls, part of Southwestern Vermont Health Care (SVHC), has earned deficiency-free status, the highest rating given, on a survey meant to determine ability to prevent transmission of COVID-19 and other infections to those living, recovering, and working within long-term care facilities.
“CNR’s staff is so diligent in their efforts to protect our patients and residents and truly skilled in infection-prevention measures,” said Suzanne Anair, the facility’s administrator. “It’s thanks to their hard work and dedication that we were able to achieve this exceptional standard of care.”

On March 20, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), healthcare’s largest payer and most rigorous regulating body, declared that they would postpone normal survey activities in order to complete targeted infection-control surveys. According to the announcement, the purpose of the new surveys was to ensure “providers are implementing actions to protect the health and safety of individuals to respond to the COVID-19 pandemic.” CNR’s infection-focused survey was on June 3, 2020. Results were received June 5.
Infection-control measures are particularly important within long-term care settings, where shared living spaces among the vulnerable elderly population have led to high rates of infection and death. Not a single known transmission of the virus has occurred at the facility.
“We always take infection-prevention seriously, and we implemented the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s recommendation ahead of schedule,” said Jennifer Carangio, RN, CNR’s Director of Nursing. “Our regular efforts and prompt action led to a superior performance on this survey.”
One safety measure requires restricting visitors to those providing medical care only.
“While it is very difficult for residents and their families, restricting visitors is an important part of the infection-prevention plan,” said Anair.
