The Sweet Sound Of Music Once Again

by Amy Modesti

After a first week postponement, the summer concerts at the Brunswick Community Center kicked off this past Tuesday, July 14, with the band Big Fez and the Surfmatics taking the stage.

There was a good crowd, though tempered by social distancing. After a spring of pretty much being stuck at home, for many it was a delight to get out and enjoy the weather and the music with some friends and family.

Fans of these concerts weren’t the only ones impacted. It has been tough on the musicians as well. Guitar/vocalist with the band and Brunswick resident John Haggerty told The Eastwick Press “Like all musicians, everything pretty much got shot down. We lost just about everything between March and the end of the year. So fortunately, townships are allowed to have events like this with modifications. We’ll be playing some of these type of shows, but aside from that, it’s you know, just, it’s a lot of rehearsal time which is nice. We can hone our craft a little bit. We miss our fans, we’ve got such a good following.”

As for why he enjoys performing in Brunswick, “I grew up out here. My family is here. I have a home here in town. So it’s really great because it’s like old home day for me to see all my old pals so that part is great. And then just to be able to play again. A lot of these folks have been following us for six years. They haven’t seen us in a long time.”

“We’ll just have to be patient. Fortunately, you know there is going to be an end to all this eventually. We don’t know when, but it’s the matter of finding a vaccine and finding a cure. All kind of important stuff. And we know that’s going to happen, just we don’t know when.”

The Brunswick Summer Concert Series continues on Tuesday, July 21 with The Tichy Boys, weather permitting.
