Outdoors With Trix

July 23, 2020 By steve bradley

Congratulations, Trix

Trix joined the Master Naturalist program in 2019. Since then, she has completed 30 training hours and 266 volunteer hours to become a Master Naturalist!

Dash into the area woods after a rain and you will likely see an orange colored eft, which is the juvenile stage of the Red-Spotted Newt (Notophthalmus viridescens), and common in eastern North America. This eft was found in the wet woods of Petersburgh. Photo by Trix Niernberger.

Trix puts her naturalist knowledge to use educating her local community on the benefits of the natural elements of the outdoors. She submits weekly photographs and captions of plants and animals found on the Rensselaer Plateau to Rensselaer County’s community newspaper, The Eastwick Press. These photos are posted on their website (https://eastwick.sevenarrowscreative.com/?s=outdoors) as a section called “Outdoors with Trix.”

She also spends many hours submitting observations for iNaturalist (https://www.inaturalist.org/) and identifying others’ submissions. To date, she has submitted 421 observations herself, and identified 4,867 submissions of others!

Congratulations again, Trix, on becoming a Master Naturalist! Thank you for your passion for engaging your community, and your dedication to citizen science!
