Board Seeks To Fix A Leak In Its Water TankPetersburgh
by Alex Brooks
Town officials trying to find the leak that the Petersburgh Water District has been experiencing have come to the conclusion that the leak is in the bottom of the water tank. Because of some diagnostic work done last week in which the tank was closed off and the water level dropped when no water was being pumped in or out of it, Petersburgh supervisor Dennis Smith said “We don’t know for sure, but our best guess is that the tank is leaking.” The Town has called in a firm called Atlantic Underwater Services to find and fix the leak.

To work on the tank, the company needs it to be either full of water or empty of water. Since the Water District does not currently have the ability to fill the tank, it will be emptied. On Monday August 31 the tank had about 7 feet of water in it (a few days before that it had been under a foot).
The plan was to hook up the water tanker that had been parked in the municipal parking lot to a hydrant near the top of the system, and have that supply water to the system while the tank was being worked on. Town officials outlined their plan to State and County Health Department officials in a conference call on Tuesday September 1 at 1 pm, and got permission to proceed. Atlantic Underwater Services came Wednesday September 2 to work on the tank, and there were high hopes that the elusive leak that has been plaguing the Petersburgh Water District for a month or more might finally be fixed.
