Smoked chicken and ribs? What more can be said about the perfect food to consume at a community BBQ?
STRIDE Adaptive Sports in West Sand Lake hosted the 3rd Annual STRIDE BBQ and Brew fundraiser Friday afternoon. Over 250 ribs and chicken dinner meals, made on premises by Iron Works Grill of Troy, were sold. Along with dinners, guests could sample a Nine Pin Cider beverage or bottled water and eat a free cup of Stewart’s ice cream.
Guests had the option of picking up their dinners at curbside delivery or eat on site. Live entertainment was provided by local act, “Pearl.”

Stride CEO, Mary Ellen Whitney told The Eastwick Press, “It’s the third annual, but because of COVID, we had to modify the event.” Two fundraisers were held off site at both S&S Brewery in Nassau and Nine Pin Cider in Albany. Due to the current pandemic, its third event was held outdoors at STRIDE’s parking lot in West Sand Lake.
This event was sponsored by many businesses and organizations, including an organization that will soon be forming a partnership with STRIDE – the Stand Up and Play Foundation C.D. of NY State Chapter. Founded by Mark and Jackie Boucher of Ballston Lake, its mission is to assist disabled veterans and warriors in playing outdoor sports such as golf, fishing, and archery. Mark conducts golf clinics every two weeks at Fairways of Halfmoon in Clifton Park and has been involved in the organization for three years. A month ago, Boucher and his team met with STRIDE to discuss formation of a partnership.
“Pearl” has been involved in helping STRIDE out for some time. The band’s lead guitarist is a veteran and they provide entertainment at other veteran programs. “Pearl,” with Whitney joining in on flute and vocals, performed a series of covers from “The Marshall Tucker Band,” “Steely Dan,” and “The Moody Blues.”
STRIDE’s mission is to educate and empower special needs individuals in life-changing sports and recreation activities while leading a healthy and fun life. It is also noted for its work with the Capital Regions Wounded Warriors programs. Go to https://www.stride.org/ for more info.
