Playoffs Move to Final Rounds

by Kevin Weeden

Dewstomper Golf Notes: Every Wednesday morning a group of guys, any where from 15-25 gather to play in the “dew.” With an approximate 8 am start, there is a wide range of golfing abilities that show up. Using the a modified stableford system, 1 point for bogey, 2 points for a par, and 4 points for an eagle, and a handicap based on how you play, the pace of play is brisk. Two hours is the anticipated pace of play. Bogey is the worst score you can take, so play keeps moving. All prizes paid out that day. Results from 9/23 (17 players): 1st place  Randy “the president” Hall and Keith Shannon plus 3;  2nd place Daniel (Berger) Plus 2 Closest to the Pin on hole #3: Perry Bouplon  10’ 6” Come on over and join the fun. Done by 10 am.

Monday Night Duffers League Playoffs:  After 18 short weeks of league play, 24 teams were dwindled down to 8. Four teams from each of the 12-team divisions reached the playoffs.  In Division A, Peter Martin III and Kevin Weeden got in by winning the first half.  Rik Seiler and Larry Donovan reached the playoffs by winning the 2nd half. Nick Diotte and Dave Jones earned the 3rd seed with the most points during the regular season by a non-division winner. Bob Shoemaker and Jack Daigneault got in by knocking off the defending champions, Joe Gerwin and Jeff St Gelais in the final week. In Division B, the split team of Gerry Harrington/Chris Harrington and Nick Pallo/Marsh Ogert earned the top seed by winning the most points and the 2nd half. Henry Rose and Garth Duclos won the 1st half. Tom Condon Sr. and Keith Shannon got the 3rd seed. Dale Dearstyne and Jeff Hull earned the 4th seed by 1 point over the 5th seed. All those weeks and it came down to 1 point.

Monday Night Duffers League Playoffs Round One  #1 seed, Peter Martin III/Kevin Weeden vs. #4 seed, Bob Shoemaker/Jack Daigneault. (Straight up) Peter and Jack parred hole #1.  Kevin parred hole #2 and Bob won with a bogey. After 3 par threes on hole #3, Kevin and Pete led 3.5 to 2.5. Bob won the next 2 holes and split hole 6. Jack and Kevin split all 3 holes. After 6 holes, Jack and Bob led 6.5 to 5.5 and were up 2 strokes overall. Pete had a great birdie for a win on hole 7. With the other 3 golfers parring the hole, the match was tied 7-7, but Kevin and Pete were still down a stroke. Hole #8 swung the match in Kevin and Pete’s favor as they both parred the hole and took a 9-7 lead and a one-stroke lead. Hole #9 has a tough postage stamp green. Pete stuck the green and Kevin chipped it close. Kevin and Pete finished par/par to win the holes and the match 13-7. Kevin won 6-3 and Pete won 5-4. #2 seed, Rik Seiler/Larry Donovan defeated #3 seed, Dave Jones/Nick Diotte on the last hole. No scorecard was submitted to me. Rik shot 33 and Nick shot 35. #4 seed, Dale Dearstyne/Jeff Hull upset #1 seed, Chris Harrington/Gerry Harrington/Nick Pallo/Marsh Ogert. #2 seed, Garth Duclos/Henry Rose defeated Tom and Keith. No scorecards submitted to me.

Monday Night Duffers League Playoffs Division Finals

Division B: #4 seed Dale Dearstyne (9 handicap) / Jeff Hull (10 handicap) played #2 seed, Garth Duclos (8 handicap) /Henry Rose (10 handicap), from the tougher blue tees. Garth and Jeff won the first 2 holes. The match was tied, but Dale and Jeff were up 3 strokes early.  Henry had a great birdie on hole #3 for a win. Dale won his first hole with a par on hole #3. After Garth parred the #1 handicap, hole #4, his team took a 4.5-3.5 lead and took a one stroke overall lead. Dale won holes 5 and 6, while his partner tied hole 5 and won hole 6. The match stood at 7-5 with Dale and Jeff ahead and a 4 stroke lead. The match swung again as Garth and Henry both won hole 7. The match was tied 7-7 and the stroke lead was cut to 1. Henry came up with a good par on hole #8, while Garth and Jeff tied hole 8. Going into the last hole, Garth and Henry led 8.5-7.5 and the strokes were even. On hole 9, Garth had a bogey for a one stoke win, while Jeff did the same. That put the match at 9.5-8.5 in Henry and Garth’s favor and the strokes were tied. But Garth and Henry were giving one stroke, so Dale and Jeff won the 2 points for winning the total strokes by 1 and making the match 10.5-9.5. WOW, that had to be awesome!! Garth had the low net for the match with a net score of 38.

Division A:  This match pitted the top 2 seeds, Peter Martin III (4 handicap) / Kevin Weeden (5 handicap) vs. Rik Seiler (0 handicap) / Larry Donovan (7 handicap). On a cool Sunday morning, Pete came out on fire with his putter. He started with 2 bogeys and 2 birdies to win the first 4 holes over Rik. At the same time, Larry took 3 out of the first 4 points over Kevin. So after 4 holes, the match was 5-3. Kevin won holes 5 and 6 with 2 pars. Rik and Pete split these holes with pars. After 6 holes, Kevin and Pete took a commanding lead 8-4. Rik had a birdie on hole 7, while Kevin and Larry split the hole. The match stood at 8.5-5.5, but Kevin and Pete help an 8 stroke lead. Rik and Larry made it interesting with 2 pars on hole 8 for wins. The match stood at 8.5-7.5 but Kevin and Pete still led by 5 strokes. The drama was over as Pete struck the green and had a birdie. Kevin parred the hole for a win. Pete won 6-3 with his best round from the blue all year, even par 35.  Pete had a remarkable net score of 31 from the blues. Pete only lost 3 matches, in 20 weeks of play, all year. Kevin and Larry split the match. This set up the final match, top overall seed, Peter Martin III/Kevin Weeden vs. the hot underdog team of Dale Dearstyne/Jeff Hull. Stay tuned next week for the exciting conclusion to a “different season.”
