Storing Carbon
Sphagnum moss lives in moist areas and holds up to 26 times as much water as its weight. Dried sphagnum moss is called peat moss. Peatlands purify water, reduce flooding, and store twice as much carbon as forests thereby lessening global warming.
This lovely sphagnum moss was found next to a vernal pool in the Petersburgh woods.
