Some Winter High School Sports May Go Forth

November 13, 2020 By steve bradley

Dr. Robert Zayas, the Executive Director of the New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPSAA) released a statement concerning winter high school sports on Monday, November 9.

It reads in part, “after consultation with state officials today, NYSPHAA has confirmed low and moderate risk winter sports (bowling, gymnastics, indoor track and field, skiing, swimming and diving) are permitted to be played.

In a basketball game from February of this year Hoosick Falls’ Max Kipp (15) goes up for a shot that Tamarac’s James Poulin, left, and Michael Gendron try to make a stop. High school basketball is one of the high risk sports not as yet approved to be played this winter. Eastwick Press file photo.

NYSPHSAA has established November 30 as the winter sports start date. At this time, authorization has not been provided for high risk sports to begin play. The high risk sports start date continues to be examined and will be revised if needed but is contingent upon authorization from state officials.”

The WASAREN League, which most of the area schools participate in, canceled all fall sports in September. Some other area leagues choose to go forward with low and moderate risks sports. There has been no official comment yet from the WASAREN league concerning winter sports.
