Monday, April 30, 1849: Today Stephen Palmer the son of Russell Palmer began to work for me by the month at four dollars per month for five months. Stephen helped me set out seed turnips and we began to plant over our early potatoes, they had froze and spoiled what we had got planted.
Wednesday: I took the two wheel carriage and carried Charlotte E. over to Mr. Hildridge’s to see if he would get boosums to Troy but he was not home. I and Stephen planted potatoes and John F. plowed oat ground near the barrack.
Sunday: Towards night I walked over to Mr. Holdridge’s to see if he had got boosums to Troy for my wife to make but he had not.
Friday, May 11: We worked on my Rodgers farm, I sowed five and a half bushels of oats, and John harrowed and plowed and drew manure and Stephen loaded. Today Mr. James Chapman quarreled Geo P. and then he struck him. Geo P. went to Squ. Strait and got a writ for said Chapman in behalf of the people.
Saturday: John F. took our new one horse wagon and took it back to Bartlett’s shop and had another set hold back for last night Abraham Haley was taking said wagon from Hancock and the folls being too short or hold back being put in wrong and the horse kicked and he left the wagon and came home. Today Geo P. went to Squ. Strait’s twice, the last time constable took said James Chapman to Squ. Strait’s and his trial was appealed to the grand jury in Troy.
