Board of Trustee Highlights
by Denise Wright
Mayor Adam Acquario reported at the December 9 Board of Trustees meeting that Charter/Spectrum agreed on language changes in the franchise agreement. He is continuing to encourage Spectrum to expand into the hamlets. He also reported that the Climate Smart laminated maps developed with the assistance of Cornell Cooperative Extension have been mailed to all village residents and have been receiving positive feedback. He hopes that residents will be able to go onto the village website to review the Village Handbook that has been developed by the village’s Climate Smart Taskforce by the week of December 18. The handbook aims to provide a “general guide to living in the village” and be updated periodically. The guide will provide helpful information about amenities and institutions in the area. Trustee and Taskforce chairwoman Lydia Davis hopes that residents will be able to review the handbook and learn about village services and get “advice about green energy alternatives and other useful, money-saving green initiatives.” The Climate Smart Taskforce is always looking for members and input from residents. If anyone is interested in becoming a Taskforce member, please contact the mayor of East Nassau, Adam Acquario, at mayor@villageofeast

The other item discussed was the village’s title as a Purple Heart community. East Nassau participated in this program as “a way for our village to recognize our veterans,” commented Michael Lever, Board of Trustee member and Coast Guard Veteran. After the village approved a resolution, the village was honored with a proclamation from Senator Daphne Jordan as being one of the 43rd Senate District’s Purple Heart communities at Chandler Young VFW Post in Nassau. According to Jordan, this is “a special way to recognize and honor the courage and commitment of Purple Heart recipients.” Lever presented information about getting designation plaques for the village. East Nassau is looking at having six road signs installed throughout the village in the spring of 2021.
