There Is No Place For Violence In Our Democracy

Dear Editor,

We are all outraged at the violence and destruction that took place in our Nation’s Capitol last week. Regardless of our political views, Americans should be able to agree there is no place in our democracy for injuring or murdering police officers, threatening our legislators or destroying property, most especially the buildings that symbolize our nation’s commitment to a free and open exchange of ideas and a government of laws.

It is alarming to read there may be continued violence planned, including at our own Albany Capital building. We were gratified to learn that the Columbia County Board of Supervisors, Republicans and Democrats, signed a joint condemnation of violence, joined by town supervisors for many Columbia County communities as well as endorsed by Jake Ashby, our local Assembly representative.

Columbia County statement dated January 7, 2021: “We strongly condemn the violent actions of those who invaded the U.S. Capitol buildings yesterday. This shameful activity is not to be condoned. Lawlessness and rioting are never acceptable, in any fashion, no matter the reason.

Our democracy rests on the orderly and peaceful transition of power, and this transition from one president to another must be allowed and supported. While we each have our political views and affiliations, we stand united in upholding the rule of law, and the Constitution of the United States. We ask you to do the same; our democracy depends upon it.”

We call on our Rensselaer County legislation and community leaders to take a similar stand and join Columbia County in a united stand against violence and in support of the peaceful transfer of power.
