Spread Underground
Flat-branched Tree Clubmoss (Dendrolycopodium obscurum) is not a moss, but rather an evergreen plant native to the eastern U.S. Usually standing six inches tall, it grows in colonies spread by stems underground. Today’s clubmosses are similar to those found in fossil records dating back 390 million years.
This one was found in a colony in the rich woods of Petersburgh.
