Patire Resolution Opposes Assembly Move To Outlaw Shooting Sports In Schools
District 5 Rensselaer County Legislator Bruce Patire has authored a County Legislative Resolution that opposes a bill, currently moving through the New York State Assembly, prohibiting clay target shooting clubs in state high schools. Mr. Patire argues that schools in Eastern Rensselaer County (which he represents) have supported successful membership in such leagues, and that he believes they foster healthy competition and opportunities for co-ed and adaptive student athletes, as many shooting ranges are handicapped accessible.

In his legislation, he notes participation is sponsored by fundraising, local business and clubs. He also points out safety is the first priority of any club, with all student athletes and coaches required to attend a New York State Hunter Education course before participation in practice or competition.
Recently, both Hoosick Falls and Berlin High Schools have seen the formation of these clubs.
His legislation has been approved by the Rules Committee of the County Legislature, and will be considered by the full legislature on Tuesday, February 9.
