Unity House Will Soon Be Here
by Doug La Rocque
At the Village Board meeting on Tuesday, March 9, Police Chief Bob Ashe announced that Unity House will be opening an office in the Armory. Unity House will be offering services to residents of Hoosick Falls and surrounding communities. These services range from Domestic Violence to Legal Resources. On Thursday March 11, the office located at the Armory will be opening. Hours will be announced.
This new location will make it easier for residents living in Hoosick and surrounding communities to seek assistance in times of need.

No Parade But Walk Anyway
With the annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade postponed until September, the parade committee is urging residents and visitors to still feel free to walk around the Village on Saturday, March 13 at noon to enjoy the many celebrations still taking place.
Local Laws
There are two pending local laws still under review between the trustees and attorneys. They are the much publicized Chicken Law, to allow village residents to keep chickens under certain spelled out conditions. The other deals with removing snow from sidewalks after storms.
Need A New Filter
Mayor Allen said the water filtration system is in need of a new filter, price tag about $2,000.
According to the Mayor this is part of the system not associated with the PFOA filtration, which is the village’s responsibility.
Take A Seat
In particular, on a piece of equipment that was once part of the Walter Wood farm equipment line. Trustee Kevin O’Malley says these are being made into park benches by a local resident, and hopes to see them distributed around Wood Park and other sites in the village starting this spring.
Talking Trash
It is nearly time to bid for a hauler to handle curbside solid waste collection. County Waste currently picks up on Thursdays and Fridays, and trustees asked if it was acceptable to change these collection days, if it meant a better contract. They eventually settled on keeping the current collection days as their preference, but would make a switch if the conditions were right.
The bidding process for the village will be handled by the Eastern Rensselaer County Solid Waste Management Authority, knows as ERCSWMA.
The board also voted to extend the inter-municipal agreement between the Village and the Town of Hoosick concerning assessors duties. That agreement came into place last year, when the Village gave up its own assessing district, at the urging of the county.
Trustees again tabled discussion on changing fees at the transfer station, and on a request for an adjustment to a water bill. The North Hoosick Fire Department has withdrawn its request to attach a radio tower at the Rensselaer Street Pumping Station, having found a resident at even higher ground who is willing to work with them.
