Area Resident
The Downy Woodpecker (Dryobates pubescens) is native to deciduous and mixed forests in North America, and a year ‘round resident here. The larger Hairy Woodpecker, also a resident here, looks very similar to the Downy.

These woodpeckers have long and narrow tongues that wrap around their brains to act as shock absorbers during repeated hammering. This photo was taken at Grafton Lakes State Park by Trix Niernberger. The Grafton Lakes State Park is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year.
