Statement Courtesy of the NYS Department of Parks and Recreation
In the January 7 edition of The Eastwick Press, our front page story was a report on four area dams and their recent designation by the Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) as unsound. As we initially reported, this designation doesn’t mean there is a threat of imminent failure, and a recent statement from the New York State Department of Parks and Recreation reads as follows:
“As indicated by the DEC, there is no risk to the public of imminent failure at these dams. Parks staff has the ability to lower water levels at these dams in advance of predicted heavy rains to limit stress on the infrastructure.
Currently, DEC is reviewing a permit application by Parks to rehabilitate an upstream wall on the Black River Pond Dam. Parks also has a grant application pending with the Federal Emergency Management Agency for hiring of a consultant to study potential removal of the Martin Dunham Reservoir Dam and environmental restoration of the area.”
