Former Hoosick Falls Village Police Chief Robert (Bob) Ashe was arrested by NYS Police on Monday, May 16, and accused of Official Misconduct. He pled guilty that evening in Village Court to the charge, a misdemeanor. Village Court Judge Thomas Restino gave the former chief an unconditional discharge and ordered him to pay a $205 court surcharge.
Mr. Ashe’s conviction would have automatically resulted in his termination and removal from public office, however, he officially resigned his position the previous Friday.
According to the NYS Police press release, the investigation revealed the former chief stole evidence and then created paperwork to cover up the theft. Columbia County District Attorney Paul Czajka was appointed the special prosecutor in the investigation by Rensselaer County Court Judge Jennifer Sober.
Mr. Ashe has been on paid suspension since December of last year, after it was reveal NYS Police were looking into his alleged participation in a potential voter fraud case concerning last November’s general election. Hoosick Falls Mayor Rob Allen announced the resignation on Monday morning, saying “We wish him the best of luck with his future endeavors.” The Mayor added, “Our Village Police Officers stepped up and served with distinction and honor over the past several months. We are deeply appreciative of their efforts and dedication. Officer-in-Charge Paul Aleksonis will continue to lead the Village of Hoosick Falls Police Department while they provide their essential service to the Village of Hoosick Falls.” Mayor Allen indicated the Village would have no further comment at this time. It has not yet been announced when a successor to the former chief will be named, or if any other options are on the table.
Mr. Ashe has been active in law enforcement for 44 years, leading the Hoosick Falls department for the last 18. One of his recent accomplishments was enticing Unity House, a human service agency based in Troy, to open a location in the Village.
