Edward W. Schindler – Obituary

Berlin – Honorable Edward Walter Schindler, retired Berlin Town Justice, died peacefully Sunday, May 22, 2022 at his home in Berlin, surrounded by his loving family.

He was born in Queens, NY on July 31, 1928, the son of the late Howard Frederick Schindler and Vira B. Hendrickson Schindler. He graduated from Baldwin High School on Long Island, NY and served in the US Army during the Korean War from 1950 to 1952. He met his wife June McDermott in January of 1953 and they were married on June 13, 1954.  They lived in Seaford, Long Island from 1954 to 1965 when they moved upstate to Berlin, NY.

Ed was employed as a mechanical designer for Duffers Associates in Poestenkill for many years and later retired from Norwalk Turbo in Latham.

He served as a firefighter for the Wantagh Volunteer Fire Dept. on Long Island and also the Berlin Volunteer Fire Dept. He was also a commissioner for the Boy Scouts and was a member of the Stephentown Seniors for the past 10 years.

Ed served as Berlin Town Assessor from 1972 to 1975. He became the Berlin Town Justice in 1977 and served his community from 1977 to 2000, where he was known as being firm but fair.

He was the beloved husband of 68 years of June McDermott Schindler; devoted father of Edward W. (Barbara) Schindler, Jr. of Norristown, PA, Eric A. (Peggy) Schindler of Albany, Kurt A. (Cynthia) Schindler of Puerto Rico, Laura S. (William) Fisk of Schodack and the late Jean E. (Dave) Cummings of Stephentown; proud grandfather of Kenneth (Samantha) Bink, Loreal (Ross) Froat, Katie (Dustin) Olsen, Molly (Ian Hubbard) Schindler, Kurt A. Schindler, II, Karl A. (Susanna) Schindler, Kelly A. (Carlos Samudio) Schindler and Kevin A. Schindler; great grandfather of Gavin Bink, Branson and Emery Froat; brother of William Schindler of Melbourne, FL, Betty Busch of Morrisville, VT and the late Howard F. Schindler.  He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

The graveside service will be Friday, May 27 at 2 pm at the Berlin Community Cemetery, Route 22, with Rev. Trygve Tomlinson officiating.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Berlin Food Closet, c/o United Methodist Church, 17 South Main Street, Berlin, NY 12022 or to the Berlin Volunteer Fire Company, PO Box 269, Berlin, NY 12022.
