Facing Attempted Murder Charges
NYSP Press Release
On July 7, 2022, at about 10:43 pm, State Police and Washington County Sheriffs responded to 210 Jermain Hill Lane in White Creek for the report of a landlord-tenant dispute. After arriving at the scene, Matthew Parant, 38, who rents a home on the property, fired shots from a rifle at police and the property owner.
The investigation determined that Parant got into an argument with the property owner, and after learning police had been called, retrieved the rifle from his residence. While Troopers and Deputies were interviewing the property owner, Parant threatened to kill the officers and then began to shoot. Parant then barricaded himself inside the home with his girlfriend. Members from the State Police Crisis Negotiations Unit responded and negotiated with Parant for several hours.
At about 4:25 am, Parant left his residence and attempted to drive away from the scene in a van. Members from the New York State Police S.O.R.T (Special Operations Response Team) stopped Parant and took him into custody. Parant was arrested on the following charges:
- Attempted Murder in the second degree, a class “B” felony
- Attempted Murder in the first degree, a class “A-1” felony (2 counts)
No one was injured during the incident.
State Police were assisted at the scene by the Washington County Sheriff’s office, Rensselaer County Sheriff’s office, Cambridge Police Department and Cambridge Valley Rescue Squad.
This investigation is ongoing, and additional charges are expected.
