Grafton – Robert L. Crandall, 86, of Route 2, Grafton, NY, died peacefully at his home on Saturday evening, November 26, surrounded by his loving family and under the care of Community Hospice of Rensselaer County.
Born February 12, 1925, in Troy, NY, he was the son of the late Alexander W. and Florence M. Griswold Crandall. Bob was the loving husband of the former Sylvia R. Grogan, whom he married on November 30, 1950, in the Seventh Day Baptist Church in Berlin, NY. They were residents of Grafton since 1953.

Born on March 21, l921, to Harold and Harriet (West) McEckron, she had resided in Manchester, VT, with her 12 siblings. With her sharp mind and keen intellect, she graduated at the top of her class from Burr and Burton Seminary in Manchester in l939.

Hoosick Falls – Eleanor J. (Couch) Greenwood, 83, passed away on Saturday, November 26, at her residence on Rensselaer Street in Hoosick Falls, NY. She was the wife of the late William J. Greenwood Jr.
Born on November 22, 1928, in Manchester, VT, Eleanor was the daughter of Albert Duncan and Flora (Streeter) Couch. She graduated from Burr & Burton High School in Manchester. Eleanor worked at the Ben Franklin’s Store in Hoosick Falls before retiring from Woolworth’s in Bennington, VT, after many years of service.

The Life Of George Holcomb – George Begins His Life’s Work

When the last episode ended, Holcomb had just returned on November 17, 1813, from a year’s journey to Eastern Massachusetts, his first extended time away from home. His father had asked him to come home to take over the family farm.
Holcomb left originally to escape the draft, but having secured a new “certificate” exempting him from military service because he is hard of hearing, he apparently felt safe enough to come home.

After sailing to victory in the NYS Class C semi-final match on Saturday against Tully High School the Hoosick Falls girls soccer team, ranked #2 in the State, faced a formidable foe on Sunday. On Saturday Long Island’s Friends Academy, ranked #4, knocked off #1 Keshequa High School 3-2 to meet HF in the Championship game.

Panther Football Falls In Semi-Final Heartbreaker

Stephentown Town Board Action – 2012 Budget Set At 2% Tax Levy Increase

The Stephentown Town Board adopted a budget for 2012 on Monday evening that calls for exactly a 2% increase in the tax levy. The budget includes projected expenditures of $583,345 from the General Fund, $663,645 from the Highway Fund and $137,000 from the Fire District, for a total of $1,383,990. This is a decrease in spending of close to 1% from the current year’s budget. With revenue expected to be down by about $26,000, and $20,000 to be taken from the unexpended fund balance, the tax levy comes to $795,990, a 2% increase. As Councilman Bill Jennings put it at a budget hearing the week before, the Board could easily override the State’s new 2% tax cap with a simple majority Board vote, but they felt they should make every effort to stay within the spirit of the law.
