The Stephentown Volunteer Fire Department will hold a Texas Hold’em Tournament on Saturday, October 22, in the Stephentown Fire Hall, located on Grange Hall Road in Stephentown. The doors will open at 5 pm and close at 6 pm. Play begins at 6:15 sharp.
A free buffet will be served at the first break, and refreshments will be available.

“Free At Last” Comes To The North Chatham Free Library
In 1874, Mark Twain’s cook, Mary Ann Cord, a former slave, told Twain and his family her history of cruelty, family loss and ultimate survival. Twain was so moved, he wrote it down, “repeated word for word as I heard it,” and that story was published in The Atlantic Magazine as “A True Story.”
Dr. John Cooley, a Mark Twain scholar, along with Carline Murphy and Azouke Legba, bring that story to life with a dramatic reading at the North Chatham Free Library on Sunday, October 23, at 3 pm.

George Holcomb’s House

This is the beginning of a series about the life of George Holcomb, a Stephentown farmer of the early Eighteenth Century. He kept a journal of his activities which ultimately filled over 11,000 pages. It is a fascinating document, but the trouble is, the antique script is extremely difficult to read. This problem is solved by a typescript that, incredibly, was the work of only one woman. Betty McClave worked long hours every day for a year and a quarter, typing the journal and recording references to people in the Stephentown Historical Society’s cemetery list. It was her hard work which makes possible this series of articles on Holcomb’s life.

Pioneer Fish & Game Club Elects Officers

The Pioneer Fish and Game Club, Inc.’s 65th annual election of officers and banquet was held at the club grounds in Potter Hill on September 18. The election results are as folows: President – Ed Sukuskas, Vice President – Rodd Post, Treasurer – Dick Ogden, Secretary – Gary Sargood.
A short meeting was held and afterward a pig roast was enjoyed by more than 50 members and guests. The Rensselaer County Conservation Alliance was represented by Vice President Tom Agar.
GLSP Hosting Fall Outdoor Fun Day And Barbecue
Grafton Lakes State Park is hosting its second Fall Fun Day on Sunday, October 22. This year it will feature a barbecue from Brunswick Barbecue & Brew. There will also be live music from The Stray Dogs, a treasure hunt, a bike ride and foliage hike and much more! Enjoy this beautiful time of year in the outdoors by adventuring in Grafton Lakes State Park for the day.

Rensselaer Land Trust Oktoberfest Benefit
The 4th Annual Oktoberfest Benefit for the Rensselaer Land Trust will be held from 4 to 11 pm on Saturday, October 15, at Brown’s Brewing Company’s Revolution Hall, 425 River Street, Troy. Celebrate clean water for clean beer with music by Fritz’s Polka Band, Flood Road Bluegrass and The Lustre Kings. There is a $5 cover charge.
Glenn Miller
Hoosick – Glenn Richter Paul Miller, 48, passed away on Saturday, October 8, 2011, at the Samaritan Hospital in Troy, NY. He had resided on Route 7 in Hoosick, NY, with the love of his life Sherry Marozas.
Born on September 10, 1963, in Weymouth, MA, Glenn was the son of Ronald K. and Anne F. (Dasey) Miller. Glenn worked as a self-employed carpenter throughout his life. He enjoyed working with his hands, woodworking and drawing. He enjoyed riding his Harley-Davidson.
Survivors, other than his fiancée and his parents, include his son, two brothers, three sisters, three step-daughters, a step-son, a step-brother, two step-sisters and three step-grandchildren as well as several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services are Friday, October 14, at 10:30 am from the Mahar Funeral Home, 43 Main Street in Hoosick Falls, NY. Relatives and friends may call at the funeral home on Friday from 9:30 am until the start of the service. Burial will follow at Maple Grove Cemetery in Hoosick Falls. Memorial contributions may be made to either the Second Chance Animal Shelter or the American Heart Association through the funeral home.

Petesburgh/Berlin – Stephen Michael Walters, 56, went home to Jesus on September 24, 2011, in Ardmore, OK. He was born January 23, 1955, in Troy, NY, to Harold Henry and Violet May (Kaiser) Walters. She had resided at the Hoosick Falls Health Center in Hoosick Falls, NY, and formerly in Troy, NY, Venice, FL, and Ossining, NY. She was the wife of the late Henry J. Heil.
